Job Description Nairobi

Principal Laboratory Technologist Job

V/NO. 3/2020,

Salary Scale: Ksh. 55,150 – 82,330 p.m (CSG 8),

House Allowance: Ksh. 35,000 p.m,

Commuter Allowance: Ksh. 8,000 p.m,

Extraneous Allowance: Ksh. 25,000 p.m,

Leave Entitlement: 30 days per financial year,

Medical Benefits: As existing in the Civil Service,

Qualifications

be serving at the grade of Senior Laboratory Technologist, CSG 9 or in a comparable and relevant position in the wider public service or private sector;
have a Diploma in any of the following fields:- Applied Sciences(Biology, chemistry, Analytical chemistry ), Laboratory Sciences, Medical Laboratory Technology, Biotechnology, Food Science and Technology from a recognized institution; and
have shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results

Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities at this level include:

coordinating provision of laboratory services in a number of units/sections;
preparing work plans and programs for laboratory service activities;
submitting samples to reference and research institutes for further analysis;
preparing laboratory manuals and quality specifications;
supervising safe laboratory waste disposal;
maintaining analytical data base, laboratory stores, records and inventory;
approving laboratory reports and work plans
initiating laboratory material requisition proposals and undertaking technical evaluation for laboratory supplies/equipment;
formulating technical laboratory standards;
developing new laboratory technologies and procedures
carrying out drug efficacy tests;
carrying out research work in the area of deployment; and
supervising and mentoring other Laboratory Staff working under the officer.

Job Description

Salary Scale: Ksh.41, 770-57,900 p.m. (CSG 9),

Extraneous Allowance: Ksh. 20,000 p.m.

Qualifications

served for a minimum period of six (6) years and currently serving at the grade of Laboratory Technologist II CSG 11 and above or in a comparable and relevant position in the public service or private sector;
a Diploma in any of the following fields: – Applied Sciences (Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, Biology), Food Science and Technology, Medical Laboratory Technology or Biotechnology from a recognized institution; and
shown merit and ability as reflected in work performance and results.

Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities at this level include:

sampling, receiving, registering and analyzing samples to determine the chemical quality and bacteriological levels;
preparing culture, media, reagents and laboratory reports;
identifying and disposing laboratory wastes;
maintaining analytical data base, laboratory stores, records and equipment;
undertaking technical evaluation of laboratory equipment, chemicals and biological items; and
liaising with regional/international reference laboratories and research institutions for further analysis.

Responsibilities

Specific duties and responsibilities at this level include:-

receiving, recording, packaging, transporting, analyzing and preserving test samples;
collecting, receiving and analyzing complex samples;
preparing laboratory reagents;
preparing media stains and dyes;
maintaining biological cultures
caring for laboratory animals
undertaking disease surveillance activities;
applying/adopting new laboratory technologies;
preparing and standardizing laboratory procedures;
demonstrating laboratory tests to students;
disposing laboratory wastes; and
training and mentoring lower level technicians.
